Jui Meng stripped of Datukship, blames Johor Umno
By Rahmah Ghazali and Stephanie Sta Maria
PETALING JAYA: PKR supreme council member Chua Jui Meng has been stripped of his "datuk" and his "datuk seri" titles, and the former MCA leader claims Johor Umno had a hand in this.
The titles were conferred on him by the late Sultan of Johor when Chua was a Barisan Nasional MP.
Contacted this afternoon, Chua told FMT that he was warned about this before.
"There were warnings given to me previously, saying that Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman would advise the (current) Sultan of Johor to take back my datukship if I join PKR," he said.
Chua claimed that he was also warned by another “Umno datuk”, whom he declined to name, not to go overboard.
"I am very disappointed with Umno and BN leaders for doing such a thing,” he said, adding that he does not blame the Sultan because he understands the “politics behind the move”.
"I still respect the Sultan because he rules my state (Johor)," said Chua.
The former health minister said he would return his “datukship medals” when he receives an official letter, adding that the palace had called him twice asking for the medals.
He, however, will keep his "datukship" as he had been conferred state awards by Pahang and Selangor, which carry the same title.
'I am willing to sacrifice'
Although he seemed unfazed by the “unprecedented” move by the palace, Chua expressed his regret as the awards were conferred by the late Sultan of Johor, Sultan Iskandar Ismail, "who had always been kind to me".
Sultan Iskandar passed away on Jan 22 this year and was succeeded by his son Ibrahim Ismail.
"He (Sultan Iskandar) was a ruler who was very concerned about me. He even conferred on me a special award... I will always remember his kindness and encouragement," said Chua.
However, his fond memories of the late Sultan were shortlived now that he has to return the “datuk-ship”.
"It has not been even a year since he passed away and now the son wants to take back what the father had given to me.
"I am a little sad...” said Chua. However, he stressed that championing the people's cause is more important than honorific titles."I am willing to sacrifice everything for the benefit of the people, especially in Johor. This will only boost my spirit to fight for them," he said.
'Umno's hand'
Echoing Chua, PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali pointed the finger at Johor Umno, saying Ghani was "ultimately responsible".
"It is also sinful because Chua did not commit a crime to deserve this. I presume that there is a lot of political pressure behind this. Ghani must clearly explain the basis for this (action) as he is ultimately responsible," he said.
Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution claimed that Umno Johor has “all the answers” as it had a "role" in this development.
"It is obvious why this had happened," he told FMT.
Saifuddin, however, believed that Chua would have been "fully aware" of the consequences before joining PKR.
"He did not request or apply for the title and I don't think he deserved this just because he made a political stand," he said.
However, he said it is the “perogative of the sultan to strip him (Chua) of his titles as it was awarded to him by the previous ruler”.
Chua joined PKR in July 2009, citing, among others, loss of confidence in the MCA leadership led by former president Ong Tee Keat and the sudden “mysterious” death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission watch.

ReplyDeleteapalah sangat gelaran datuk tu nya..
